To advocate for actions- in policy and practice- that respect and address the marginalization of peasant and indigenous-women through a shared agenda of food-sovereignty, healthy-food-systems and women-rights
SPEAK Project was founded in 2016 in Kenya by peasant and indigenous women farmers to advocate for food-systems that are healthy for people and that respect the environment and promote African women’s local seeds to increase women’s income, food sovereignty, ecological bio-diversity and community-health; advancing an African Feminist Food Sovereignty identity. SPEAK project rose from collective concern about rural women’s rights and food-quality, so that rural-women can defend local food traditions, protect food communities, advocate for good-food, gastronomic pleasure and preserve food biodiversity
SPEAK-project has transformed into a movement that embraces a comprehensive approach to food that recognizes the strong connections between plate, planet, people, politics and culture. Further, the organization encourages economic justice and women’s decision-making at community and national level to combine women’s knowledge, experiences and local capacity to call out policy makers and goverment to promote and increase healthy food-systems and the rights of women needed to achieve them.
